Evacuation and Vacuum

Pulling and verifying a deep vacuum.

How deep a vacuum should I pull on an A/C system?

Short answer: Many technicians aim for around 500 microns or lower and then perform a decay test, but follow the vehicle and equipment maker's guidance for the specific system.

Evacuation removes air and moisture from the system before charging. Moisture combines with refrigerant and oil to form acids and can freeze at the expansion device. A vacuum gauge that reads in microns shows how complete the evacuation is far better than a compound gauge.

A common target is about 500 microns, followed by a hold test. Isolate the pump and watch the gauge. If the reading climbs quickly and keeps climbing, there is a leak. If it rises a little and levels off, moisture may still be boiling off, so keep evacuating.

Pump capacity, hose size and core removal speed up evacuation. Change vacuum pump oil regularly, since contaminated oil limits how deep the pump can pull. Wear safety glasses and gloves when connecting and disconnecting service hoses.

How do I do a vacuum decay test on an A/C system?

Short answer: After pulling the system down, isolate the pump, watch the micron gauge for several minutes, and judge the rise: a small rise that levels off is moisture, a steady climb points to a leak.

A decay test confirms the vacuum you pulled will hold. Once the micron gauge reaches your target, close the valve between the pump and the system so only the system and gauge are connected. Then turn off the pump and wait.

Watch how the reading behaves. A small rise that levels off usually means a trace of moisture is still boiling off, so evacuate longer. A reading that keeps climbing steadily toward atmospheric pressure points to a leak in the system, hoses or fittings. Check the hoses and connections first, since they leak more often than you would expect.

Read the gauge as close to the system as practical, not at the pump, so hose restriction does not hide what is happening. Follow the vehicle and equipment maker's procedure for target and hold time. Wear safety glasses when connecting service hoses.

Why do I need a micron gauge if my manifold has a vacuum gauge?

Short answer: A compound manifold gauge cannot show the small differences that matter near a deep vacuum, while a micron gauge measures them directly so you know moisture is gone and the system holds.

The low-side gauge on a manifold reads in inches of mercury and is designed to show pressure, with vacuum as an afterthought at the bottom of the dial. Near full vacuum, the needle barely moves even though the remaining moisture and air make a big difference to system performance and life.

A micron gauge measures absolute pressure in microns of mercury and resolves very small changes. It tells you when the pump has actually pulled the system down to the target, and it is the tool you need for a decay test. Many digital manifolds include a micron sensor or accept one.

Place the gauge where it reads the system rather than the pump, keep the sensor clean and away from oil, and calibrate or check it as the maker recommends. Wear eye protection whenever you connect or disconnect service hoses.

How do I choose and maintain a vacuum pump for A/C work?

Short answer: Pick a two-stage pump sized for the work and rated for the refrigerants you service, change the oil often, and protect it from refrigerant and moisture.

Automotive A/C systems are small compared with building systems, so pump size mainly affects how fast you reach the target rather than how deep you can go. A two-stage pump generally reaches deeper vacuum than a single-stage pump. If you service R-1234yf, check whether the equipment maker or vehicle maker calls for spark-free or yf-rated equipment.

Oil is the main maintenance item. Vacuum pump oil absorbs moisture and contaminants from every system you evacuate, and contaminated oil cannot pull a deep vacuum. Change it often, and always after evacuating a wet or contaminated system. Use the oil the pump maker specifies.

Never run the pump to pull refrigerant out of a charged system; recover first with a recovery machine. Cap the inlet when stored. Run the pump on a grounded outlet, keep cords out of walkways, and wear safety glasses when changing oil.

How long should I evacuate an A/C system after opening it?

Short answer: There is no single time; evacuate until the micron gauge reaches the target and passes a decay test, and follow the vehicle maker's minimum time if one is published.

Time is a poor measure of a good evacuation. A small, dry system with large hoses can reach a deep vacuum quickly, while a system that sat open for days or has moisture inside may take far longer. Some vehicle makers and service machines specify a minimum evacuation time, and you should meet it, but the micron reading is the real proof.

To speed things up, use short, large-diameter hoses, remove valve cores with a core tool when your setup allows it, keep pump oil fresh, and warm the system if the shop is cold, since moisture boils off more easily when warm.

If the reading stalls well above target, look for a leak or contaminated pump oil before evacuating longer. Replace the receiver drier or accumulator when the system has been open a long time, as the maker directs. Wear eye protection whenever you work on service ports.
