Floor space, lighting and equipment for static calibration.

6 answers · last reviewed 2026-11-04

What do I need in my shop to do static ADAS calibrations?

Short answer: You need a level floor area with enough space in front of and around the vehicle, controlled lighting, a calibration frame and the correct targets, measuring tools, and scan software that supports the procedures.

Static calibration demands precision. The floor area must be level within the maker's tolerance, with enough clear space in front of the vehicle for targets placed at specified distances, plus space at the sides and rear for other sensors. Many shops dedicate a bay to it.

Lighting matters for camera calibrations. Avoid bright reflections, direct sunlight and patterned backgrounds behind the target, since cameras can mistake them for target features. Keep the area clear of clutter and metal objects that can affect radar.

Equipment typically includes a calibration frame, vehicle-specific targets, measuring tools such as laser or line tools and inclinometers, and scan software with ADAS procedures. Before you invest, review the procedures for the makes you see most and check whether your space meets their requirements. Keep the vehicle at correct tire pressure and ride height, with no heavy loads, before calibrating.

Why does tire pressure and ride height matter for ADAS calibration?

Short answer: The sensor is aimed relative to the vehicle's stance, so wrong tire pressure, uneven loading or incorrect ride height can tilt it and cause a calibration that is off once the vehicle returns to normal.

ADAS calibration assumes the vehicle is sitting at its normal designed height and attitude. If a tire is low, the trunk is full of tools, or the fuel tank is empty when the procedure calls for full, the vehicle sits differently. The sensor learns its aim from that position, then points slightly wrong when the vehicle is driven normally.

Before calibrating, set all tires to the specified pressure, remove unusual cargo, check that the suspension and ride height are within specification, and meet any fuel level requirements in the procedure. Make sure wheel alignment is correct if the maker requires it before calibration.

These steps take a few minutes and avoid repeat calibrations and comebacks. They are also part of good documentation, so note tire pressure and conditions on the calibration record.

How do lighting and surroundings affect ADAS calibration?

Short answer: Bright or uneven lighting, reflective surfaces, clutter in the camera's view and metal objects near radar can cause calibrations to fail or produce errors, so makers specify a clear, controlled area.

Cameras need to see target patterns clearly. Sunlight through a door, glare on the floor, or patterned walls can confuse the camera or prevent it from locking on to targets. Service information often specifies even lighting and plain surroundings behind the targets.

Radar calibrations can be affected by metal objects, other vehicles, and reflective surfaces within the radar's field. Clear the area in front of the vehicle as the maker describes.

Before starting, check the vehicle condition as well: fuel level, tire pressures, ride height, and no extra load, since makers specify these. Repeatable surroundings mean repeatable results. Keep the work area free of trip hazards from cables and target stands, and follow the equipment maker's instructions for moving heavy calibration frames.

What documentation should I keep after an ADAS calibration?

Short answer: Keep pre- and post-scan reports, the calibration result from the scan tool, alignment printouts if done, photos of the setup, and the service information or position statement that required the calibration.

ADAS calibration affects safety systems, and insurers and customers increasingly ask for proof it was done correctly. A clear record also protects the shop if a question comes up later.

Typical records include a pre-repair scan showing codes, the calibration report from the scan tool showing completion, a post-repair scan with no related codes, and alignment readings when an alignment was performed. Photos of target placement and measurements show the setup was correct. Saving the vehicle maker's requirement explains why the calibration was needed.

Store records with the repair order so they are easy to retrieve. Make sure the vehicle condition was correct during calibration, and never mark a calibration complete if the tool shows a failure.

How are ADAS calibration targets positioned?

Short answer: Targets are placed at distances and heights the vehicle maker specifies, measured from reference points such as the vehicle centerline, wheel centers or bumper, and the scan tool guides the steps.

Static calibrations depend on accurate target placement. Service information or the calibration software tells you the target type, the distance from a reference point on the vehicle, the height, and alignment to the vehicle centerline or thrust line. Small errors in distance or angle can cause failure or a sensor that aims off.

Most systems use a calibration frame or stand with laser guides or measuring tools to set the target square to the vehicle. Some makers need brand-specific targets, and some European vehicles need angle measurements taken with an inclinometer.

Work on a level floor, measure carefully, and repeat measurements before starting the routine. Keep cables and stands clear of walkways, and handle heavy frames as the equipment maker directs.

How should I prepare a vehicle before ADAS calibration?

Short answer: Check tire pressures, ride height, alignment, fuel level and vehicle load, clear codes, connect a power supply, and set up the area as the vehicle maker's procedure requires.

Calibration results depend on vehicle condition. Check tire pressure, alignment and ride height, remove extra cargo, and make sure fuel levels meet the procedure.

Scan for codes and repair issues first. Connect a stable power supply.

Skipping preparation is a common reason calibrations fail or produce poor results. Check that the windshield is clean and free of damage in front of camera views, and that sensor covers and bumpers are properly installed. A checklist helps technicians perform every step consistently, and it also creates a record that the vehicle was prepared correctly.

Follow the maker's procedure for the area, lighting and target placement. Document vehicle condition before starting.
