Thread Repair

Taps, dies, chasers and thread repair for spark plugs, glow plugs and fasteners.

5 answers · last reviewed 2026-11-04

What is the difference between a thread chaser and a tap?

A chaser cleans and reforms existing threads without removing much metal, while a tap cuts new threads; use chasers to clean damaged threads and taps to cut threads in new holes.

How do I repair stripped spark plug threads?

Short answer: Use a spark plug thread repair kit that drills or taps the hole and installs an insert matched to the plug thread, following the kit's steps to avoid debris entering the cylinder.

Spark plug threads in aluminum heads can strip. Thread repair kits install inserts that restore threads. Some kits are designed for specific engines, so match the kit and insert to the plug thread size and reach shown in service information. Inserts sold separately let you restock after using the kit.

Follow the kit maker's instructions. Use grease on the tap to catch chips, and position the piston as the instructions direct. Some technicians use compressed air through the cylinder afterward, wearing safety glasses, to blow out remaining debris.

Remove debris from the cylinder, and check service information for the correct plug torque. Wear safety glasses and let the engine cool before work.

How do I repair stripped glow plug threads?

Short answer: Use a glow plug thread repair kit designed for the engine, which cuts the damaged thread and installs an insert, following the steps carefully to keep debris out of the cylinder.

Glow plugs can seize and strip threads during removal. Many repair kits include taps, inserts and guides, and some are matched to specific engines, so confirm fit before you start. Removing a seized glow plug carefully, with heat and patience, is the best way to avoid needing a repair at all.

Follow the kit's procedure, use grease to catch chips, and remove debris carefully. Debris left in the cylinder can damage the engine on startup. Check service information for proper glow plug torque.

Let the engine cool, wear safety glasses, and disconnect the battery before working on glow plug circuits.

How do I use a tap and die set correctly?

Short answer: Identify the thread size and pitch, use the correct drill size for new holes, start the tap or die straight, turn slowly with cutting oil, and back off regularly to clear chips.

Taps cut internal threads and dies cut external threads. Identify the size and pitch first, using a thread gauge or a known good fastener.

For a new hole, drill the correct tap drill size listed on the tap drill chart. Start the tap straight, use cutting oil, and turn a little at a time, backing off to break chips.

Taps are hard and brittle, so never force them. A broken tap is very hard to remove. Wear safety glasses, as chips can fly, and clamp parts securely in a vise.

How do I identify the thread size and pitch of a bolt?

Short answer: Measure the bolt diameter, then check thread pitch with a thread gauge or compare against known fasteners, keeping in mind that metric and SAE threads can look very similar.

Before cleaning or repairing threads, identify the correct size. Measure the outside diameter with calipers. Then check pitch with a thread pitch gauge or by matching a known nut or bolt.

Some metric and SAE threads are close enough to start but will cross-thread or strip. Never force a fastener that does not turn freely by hand.

Tap and die sets often include pitch gauges. Wear safety glasses when cleaning threads, and replace damaged fasteners rather than reusing them on critical parts, following service information.
