Can I use chrome sockets on an impact wrench?
Short answer: No. Chrome sockets are hard and brittle and can crack or shatter under impact; use impact sockets made of tougher steel and designed for impact tools.
Chrome sockets are made for hand ratchets and are heat treated to be hard so they can be thinner. Under the repeated hammering of an impact wrench, that hardness becomes a weakness. A chrome socket can crack or shatter, throwing fragments, and often rounds fasteners.
Impact sockets are made from steel formulated to absorb shock, usually with thicker walls and a black finish. Many have a pin and ring retaining hole. Using impact extensions and universal joints matters too, because chrome accessories have the same problem.
Impact sockets can be used on hand ratchets, though they are bulkier. For critical fasteners, use the right socket size and type, keep sockets fully seated, and wear eye protection whenever you use an impact tool.
