How do I safely support a vehicle on jack stands?

Short answer: Lift at the maker's specified points on a hard, level surface, set stands rated for the load at solid support points, lower the vehicle onto them, and test stability before going underneath.

Most serious shop injuries involving vehicles come from inadequate support. Never work under a vehicle held only by a jack. Jacks lift; stands support.

Park on a hard, level surface and chock the wheels that stay on the ground. Find the lifting points in the owner's manual or service information; pinch welds, frame rails and specific suspension points are common, and lifting at the wrong place can damage the vehicle or let it slip. Raise the vehicle, place stands rated above the load at solid support points, and lower slowly until the weight rests on the stands.

Push on the vehicle gently to check stability before you go underneath. Keep the jack in place as a backup when practical. Inspect stands for bent legs, damaged ratchets or cracked welds, and retire damaged stands immediately. Use pairs of matched stands at the same height.
