How do I use and store a click torque wrench so it stays accurate?

Short answer: Pull smoothly at the handle until it clicks, stop at the click, and store the wrench set to its lowest setting, not zero below the scale, so the spring is not left compressed.

A click torque wrench works by releasing a spring-loaded mechanism at the set torque. For an accurate reading, hold the handle at its marked grip point and pull with a smooth, steady motion at a right angle to the wrench. Stop as soon as it clicks. Jerking the wrench or continuing to pull past the click overshoots the setting.

After use, turn the setting back down to the lowest mark on the scale. Leaving it set high keeps the spring compressed and can cause drift over time. Do not turn below the lowest mark unless the maker says to.

Never use a click wrench to break fasteners loose, and do not use it as a breaker bar. Avoid dropping it, keep it clean and store it in its case. Have it checked and calibrated on a regular schedule, commonly once a year or after heavy use or a drop, following the maker's guidance.
