How does a ball joint press work?
Short answer: A ball joint press uses a C-frame and a forcing screw with adapter cups to push a pressed-in ball joint out of the control arm or knuckle and press a new one in, often without removing the arm.
Many ball joints are pressed into control arms or knuckles. A C-frame press with matched cups applies steady force to remove and install them, often on the vehicle.
Kits include adapters for common vehicles. Choosing the right cup is important so force goes through the joint body and not the arm. Some kits use hydraulic or impact-driven screws.
Follow service information for the procedure. Support the vehicle safely on a lift or rated jack stands, wear safety glasses, and keep hands clear of the press while under load. Never use heat on ball joints unless service information allows it.
