What is ADAS calibration and why does it matter?

Short answer: ADAS calibration aligns cameras, radar and other sensors so driver assistance features see the road correctly; a sensor that is slightly off can make features like automatic braking or lane keeping act wrongly.

Advanced driver assistance systems use forward cameras, radar units, ultrasonic sensors and surround-view cameras to support features like adaptive cruise, automatic emergency braking, lane keeping and blind spot warning. Each sensor needs to know exactly where it is pointing relative to the vehicle's thrust line.

If a windshield is replaced, a bumper is removed, a radar bracket is bent, or a wheel alignment changes the thrust angle, the sensor's view can shift. A degree of error at the sensor becomes a large error down the road, so the system may track the wrong lane or react to the wrong object.

Calibration resets that aim. Depending on the vehicle, it is done with targets in the shop, called static calibration, a guided road drive, called dynamic calibration, or both. Always follow the vehicle maker's procedure, document the results, and road test. Getting it wrong has safety consequences, so do not guess.
