What is freeze frame data and how do I use it?
Short answer: Freeze frame is a snapshot of key sensor values at the moment a code set; use it to recreate the conditions, so you can see the fault happen and verify the fix.
When the computer sets an emissions code, it records a set of engine data from that instant: engine speed, load, coolant temperature, vehicle speed, fuel trims, open or closed loop status and often intake air temperature and run time. Some manufacturers record more, and some record several frames around the event.
That snapshot answers questions the customer usually cannot. Did the lean code set at idle or at highway speed? Was the engine cold or fully warm? Was it in open loop or closed loop? A P0171 with high long-term trim at idle points toward an unmetered air leak, while one that sets only at high load points toward a fuel delivery problem.
Use it twice. First, to steer your testing toward the conditions that matter. Second, to verify the repair by driving the vehicle through the same speed, load and temperature range and confirming the code does not return as pending. Always save freeze frame before clearing codes, because clearing erases it.
