What is the difference between a recovery machine and a recover, recycle, recharge machine?
Short answer: A recovery machine only removes refrigerant into a tank, while a recover, recycle, recharge machine also cleans the refrigerant, evacuates the system, and charges it back by weight.
A standalone recovery machine pulls refrigerant out of a vehicle and pushes it into a recovery cylinder. It is portable and comparatively affordable, and it is often used for contaminated refrigerant or as a second machine. You still need a vacuum pump, gauges and a scale to finish the job.
A recover, recycle, recharge machine handles the full sequence in one unit: it recovers the refrigerant, filters and separates oil and moisture so it can be reused, evacuates the system, and charges the specified amount. Machines are built for one refrigerant, so shops servicing both R-134a and R-1234yf need equipment for each or a machine designed for both.
Check that any machine meets the applicable SAE standard for the refrigerant. Never mix refrigerants in a machine or tank. Wear safety glasses and gloves, and keep R-1234yf work away from ignition sources.
