What tools do I need to start key programming?

Short answer: A key programming tool with coverage for your vehicles, a chip programmer for transponder and EEPROM work, a stock of universal keys or common blanks, a stable power supply, and a way to cut blades.

Key programming tools connect to the vehicle to add keys, program all-keys-lost situations, and read immobilizer data. Coverage varies by vehicle maker and model year, so compare tools against the vehicles you see.

A chip programmer reads and writes transponders and, on some vehicles, immobilizer data from modules removed from the vehicle. Universal smart keys can be generated by the tool to match many vehicles, which reduces inventory. A cutting method for blades or emergency keys completes the service, through a machine or a partner.

A power supply that holds steady voltage protects modules during programming. Training and service information matter as much as tools. Verify ownership on every job, and follow the tool's safety warnings about module work.
