Why does my battery tester say charge and retest?
Short answer: The battery is too discharged for the tester to judge its health accurately; charge it fully, let it rest, and test again before deciding whether to replace it.
Conductance and load testers need a reasonably charged battery to give a reliable result. When state of charge is low, the tester cannot tell whether the battery is weak because it is worn out or because it is simply flat. It asks you to charge and retest instead of guessing.
Use a charger set to the correct battery type, especially for AGM and lithium batteries, and charge fully. Let the battery rest to remove surface charge, then retest. If it now passes, the battery was just discharged, so look for the reason: a parasitic draw, a weak charging system, short trips or a vehicle that sat for weeks.
If it fails after a full charge, replacement is justified. Many testers print or save results, which helps when explaining the recommendation to the customer. Charge in a ventilated area and keep sparks and flames away, because charging batteries can release hydrogen gas.
