Oil resets, EPB, SAS, battery registration, throttle and injector relearns.

What is battery registration and when do I need a scan tool for it?

Short answer: Battery registration tells the vehicle's energy management system that a new battery was installed, so it adjusts charging for a fresh battery; many BMW, Mercedes, VW-Audi, Ford and GM models use it.

Many modern vehicles run an intelligent charging strategy. The battery management system tracks the battery's age and condition and changes charging voltage over time. When you install a new battery without telling the system, it may keep charging as if the old, worn battery were still there, which can overcharge or undercharge the new one and shorten its life.

Registration resets that history. On some vehicles you also need to code the battery's type and capacity, especially when switching between flooded, EFB and AGM batteries, or between capacity ratings.

Check service information for your vehicle. If registration is required, use a scan tool that supports battery management for that make. Connect a battery maintainer or power supply during the procedure on vehicles with long key-on routines.

How do I retract an electronic parking brake to change rear pads?

Short answer: Use a scan tool's EPB service function to put the calipers into service mode before pushing pistons back, then exit service mode and calibrate after the job.

Electronic parking brakes use a motor on each rear caliper or a central actuator. Forcing the piston back without retracting the motor can damage the actuator or strip its gears. Most vehicles require a service mode that drives the motor fully back first.

With the car on a level surface, wheels chocked and ignition on, run the EPB maintenance or pad replacement function on your scan tool. After the motors retract, compress the pistons, fit new pads, then use the tool to exit service mode. Many vehicles also need a calibration or apply-release cycle afterward.

Some models offer a manual procedure using the switch and pedals, but it varies by make and year. Never drive until the parking brake applies and releases correctly and the warning light is off.

What is a steering angle sensor reset and when is it required?

Short answer: A steering angle sensor reset teaches the stability control system where straight-ahead is, and it is usually needed after an alignment, steering component replacement or sensor replacement.

The steering angle sensor tells the stability and traction control systems which way the driver is steering. The system compares that with yaw rate and wheel speeds to detect a skid. If the sensor's zero point does not match the wheels' true straight-ahead position, the system may believe the car is turning when it is not, causing warning lights or unwanted brake intervention.

After a wheel alignment, a steering rack, column or sensor replacement, or sometimes a battery disconnect, many vehicles need a calibration. Some self-calibrate after a short drive; others need a scan tool function performed with the wheels straight and the vehicle level.

If a car has ADAS features like lane keeping, check whether the alignment also requires camera or radar calibration in addition to the steering angle reset.

Do I need a scan tool to reset the oil life monitor?

Short answer: Many vehicles let you reset oil life from the dash or steering-wheel buttons, but some makes and models need a scan tool, and a tool is faster when you service many brands.

Oil life monitors estimate oil condition from engine revolutions, temperature and driving conditions. After an oil change, the counter must be reset so the next reminder is accurate.

On many domestic and Asian vehicles, the reset is in the instrument cluster menu or done with a pedal and key sequence. Some European models and certain trucks and vans require a scan tool, and some sequences differ by year in ways that are easy to get wrong.

In a shop, a scan tool's service reset menu saves time because the steps are the same across brands. If you do it manually, look up the procedure for the exact model year rather than guessing. A missed reset is a common customer complaint after a quick service.

What is a throttle body relearn and why is it needed after cleaning?

Short answer: A throttle relearn lets the engine computer learn the new closed-throttle position and idle airflow after a throttle body is cleaned or replaced, preventing a high or unstable idle.

Over time, carbon builds up around the throttle plate and the computer gradually opens the throttle a little more at idle to compensate. When you clean or replace the throttle body, the extra opening is suddenly too much airflow, which can cause a high idle, surging, or a stall when coming to a stop.

A relearn clears the stored adaptation and lets the computer find the new baseline. Some vehicles relearn on their own with a specific key-on and idle sequence; many require a scan tool function, and some need both.

Do not wipe the inside of electronic throttle bodies with the ignition on, and avoid pushing the plate open by hand, which can damage the motor gears. Follow the cleaning guidance in service information, then perform the relearn.

What does injector coding mean on a diesel?

Short answer: Injector coding enters each new injector's calibration code into the engine computer so it can correct fuel delivery for that injector's small manufacturing differences.

Modern common-rail injectors are tested at the factory and given a trim or correction code printed on the injector body. The code tells the engine computer how that particular injector flows compared to a nominal one. With the code stored, the computer adjusts pulse width so every cylinder gets the right fuel.

When you replace injectors, the new codes must be entered with a scan tool that supports the function for that engine. Skipping it can cause rough idle, smoke, knock, poor economy or codes, because the computer is still correcting for the old injectors.

Write the codes down before installation since they are hard to read once the injector is in the head. Some gasoline direct-injection engines use a similar process, so check service information whenever you replace injectors.

What is a DPF regeneration and can a scan tool force one?

Short answer: A DPF regeneration burns soot out of a diesel particulate filter at high temperature, and many professional scan tools can command a forced or service regeneration when conditions allow.

Diesel particulate filters trap soot. Normally, the engine computer cleans the filter during driving by raising exhaust temperature, called passive or active regeneration. Short trips, idling and faults can prevent that, and the filter loads up until power is limited.

A service regeneration lets a technician command the process with the vehicle parked. The engine runs at elevated idle while exhaust temperatures climb high enough to burn soot. Before forcing one, fix the root cause: sensor faults, injector problems or excess oil consumption will reload the filter quickly.

Exhaust parts get extremely hot during a regen. Park outdoors or in a well-ventilated area, away from anything flammable, never under a vehicle or near grass, and keep people away from the tailpipe. Follow the on-screen enabling conditions exactly.
