What tools do I need to diagnose EV battery problems?
Short answer: A scan tool with EV coverage to read battery module and cell data, plus training and high-voltage PPE; some tools add a battery diagnostic kit for deeper pack analysis.
High-voltage battery diagnosis starts with data. A capable scan tool reads state of charge, state of health, cell voltages, temperatures and isolation faults from the battery management system. Patterns such as one low cell group or a temperature sensor fault point to the problem.
EV diagnostic kits add adapters and software for deeper pack analysis on supported vehicles. Insulation testers and CAT-rated meters handle high-voltage measurements that are part of approved procedures.
High-voltage work requires training, insulated gloves rated for the voltage, and following the maker's procedures for disabling the system. Never open a battery pack or disconnect orange cables without proper training and procedures. Use rated meters and leads only.
