Engine Mechanical Testing

Compression, leak-down, vacuum and other engine health tests.

What is the difference between a compression test and a leak-down test?

A compression test measures how much pressure each cylinder builds while cranking, while a leak-down test pressurizes a cylinder with shop air and measures how fast it leaks, and shows where the air escapes.

What does a wet compression test tell me?

Short answer: Adding a small amount of oil to a low cylinder and retesting shows whether rings or valves are the problem; if compression rises a lot, suspect rings, and if it barely changes, suspect valves or the head gasket.

When a dry compression test shows a low cylinder, a wet test helps narrow it down. Squirt a small amount of clean engine oil, about a teaspoon, into the cylinder through the spark plug hole and retest.

The oil temporarily seals the gap between the piston rings and cylinder wall. If compression rises noticeably, the rings or cylinder wall are worn or damaged. If compression stays about the same, the leak is somewhere the oil cannot seal, such as a valve not seating or a head gasket leak.

Do not add too much oil, since excess oil can raise readings falsely or hydrolock the cylinder. Follow up with a leak-down test to confirm. Keep fuel and ignition disabled during testing, and keep clear of the engine while cranking.

How do I use a vacuum gauge to diagnose an engine?

Short answer: Connect the gauge to a manifold vacuum source and read it at idle and 2500 rpm; a steady reading in the normal range is healthy, while fluctuations or low readings point to specific problems.

A vacuum gauge is an old tool that still gives quick insight. At idle, a healthy engine usually shows a steady reading in a typical range depending on altitude and engine design. Steady low vacuum can mean late timing or an intake leak. A needle that drops regularly can mean a burned or sticking valve. A slow drift can point to a restricted exhaust.

For exhaust restriction, hold engine speed steady around 2500 rpm. Vacuum should stay steady or rise. If it gradually drops, the exhaust may be clogged, such as by a collapsed converter.

Modern engines with variable valve timing, direct injection or turbochargers can show different patterns, so compare with known-good engines when possible. Keep the gauge hose clear of hot exhaust parts and moving belts.

How is a diesel compression test different from a gas engine test?

Short answer: Diesel engines have much higher compression pressures, so they need gauges rated for diesel and adapters that fit injector or glow plug holes, and some engines need special procedures.

Diesel engines rely on compression to ignite fuel, so pressures are much higher than gas engines. Gas compression testers cannot handle these pressures safely. Diesel kits include high-range gauges and adapters for glow plug or injector bores.

Procedures vary by engine. Some engines require removing injectors, while others use glow plug holes. Disabling fuel delivery and following the maker's procedure is essential.

Use only gauges rated for diesel, wear safety glasses, and keep clear of moving parts while cranking. Install adapters with care to avoid damaging threads, and follow the maker's torque specifications when reinstalling components.

Are digital compression testers worth it?

Short answer: Digital compression testers record peak pressure for each cylinder and sometimes the number of pulses, making comparisons easier and faster than reading an analog gauge.

An analog gauge requires watching the needle and recording each reading. Digital testers capture the peak automatically and may store readings for all cylinders, making it easier to compare and spot a weak cylinder.

Some digital testers also show the pressure rise per compression stroke, which can show slow buildup. They usually include adapters for different spark plug sizes.

Disable the ignition and fuel systems before cranking, hold the throttle open as service information directs, and keep clear of moving parts. Wear safety glasses.
