Inspection Cameras and Thermal Tools

Borescopes and thermal imagers for diagnosis.

5 answers · last reviewed 2026-11-04

What can I diagnose with a borescope?

Short answer: A borescope lets you look inside cylinders, behind panels, inside intake ports and into tight spaces without disassembly, which saves time on carbon, damage and dropped-part checks.

An inspection camera on a flexible probe goes where your eyes cannot. Through a spark plug hole you can inspect cylinder walls for scoring, piston tops for damage and valve conditions. Through the intake you can check carbon buildup on direct injection engines.

It also helps with ordinary jobs: finding a dropped bolt, checking behind a dash for a broken clip, inspecting wiring in tight areas, or looking inside frame rails for rust. Articulating tips let you steer the camera around corners.

Choose probe diameter and length to suit the work, and look for good lighting and image quality. Some scan tools accept borescope add-ons that display on the tablet. Keep the probe away from moving parts, never use it inside a running engine, and let hot components cool.

How is a thermal imager useful in automotive diagnosis?

Short answer: A thermal imager shows temperature differences at a glance, helping you find misfiring cylinders, clogged radiators, dragging brakes, failed heated seats and electrical hot spots.

Heat tells a story. On a running engine, a cylinder whose exhaust runner is cooler than the others may be misfiring. A radiator with cold patches has clogged tubes. A wheel that is much hotter after a drive suggests a dragging brake or failing bearing.

Electrical problems show up too. A connection with high resistance runs hotter than its neighbors under load, and a fuse or relay that is unusually warm points to a high draw. Heated seats, rear defrosters and heated mirrors can be checked in seconds.

Thermal imagers measure surface temperature, so shiny surfaces can give misleading readings. Learn your tool's limitations and compare similar components. Keep clear of fans, belts and hot exhaust, and never reach into a running engine bay to get a better view.

How do I inspect inside a cylinder with a borescope?

Short answer: Remove the spark plug or injector, insert the borescope through the hole, and look at the piston top, cylinder walls and valves for damage, carbon, scoring or coolant marks.

A borescope lets you look inside a cylinder without removing the head. It helps confirm suspected problems from compression or leak-down tests, such as a damaged piston, a burnt valve or coolant intrusion.

Use a thin probe with articulation if possible to see the valves and walls. Rotate the engine by hand to position the piston as needed. A clean piston top or a steam-cleaned look can indicate coolant entry.

Disable the ignition and fuel systems before turning the engine. Never crank the engine with the probe inside the cylinder. Let the engine cool, and handle the probe carefully to avoid damaging the camera tip.

Can a borescope connect to my scan tool?

Short answer: Some diagnostic tablets offer a borescope accessory that plugs into the tablet, letting you view and save images in the same device you use for diagnosis and reports.

A borescope add-on uses the tablet's screen and storage to show live video, so you do not need a separate inspection camera. Images can be saved with the vehicle's repair records and shared with customers.

Check compatibility with your specific tablet model, and compare the probe diameter, cable length and articulation with standalone inspection cameras. Standalone cameras may offer longer cables or articulation that suits engine inspections.

Keep the camera tip away from moving parts and hot surfaces, and turn off the engine before inserting the probe in engine areas.

How can a thermal camera help find brake and exhaust problems?

Short answer: A thermal camera shows temperature differences, so a dragging brake shows hotter than others after a drive, and a restricted catalytic converter or misfiring cylinder can show unusual temperatures.

After a road test, compare wheel temperatures. A wheel much hotter than the others suggests a dragging caliper, a sticking slide or a parking brake issue. Exhaust manifolds can reveal a cold cylinder when one runner is cooler than the rest.

Catalytic converter temperatures before and after the converter can suggest whether it is working, though results depend on conditions. Thermal cameras also help with cooling systems and electrical circuits, where hot connections indicate resistance.

Thermal readings are a guide; confirm with other tests. Hot components can cause burns; use the camera from a safe distance and never touch exhaust or brake parts after driving.
